From Search Term to New Instruction: A Practical Attribution Model for Law Firms
This is a practical seven-stage attribution model for law-firm paid search: search term, ad, practice-area landing page, enquiry, qualified consultation, new client instruction, fee revenue. Each stage is described with what it requires from your systems and permissions, because implementation depends far more on your case management setup than on Google Ads itself.
What are the seven stages of the chain?
Most law-firm reporting measures the first four stages well and the last three barely at all. The break is almost always at the same point: the enquiry leaves the website and enters the firm, and the campaign identity is lost at the door.
- 01Search term — what the person actually typed, not the keyword you bid on.
- 02Ad — which creative and message they responded to.
- 03Practice-area landing page — the page matched to that specific matter type.
- 04Enquiry — a form submission or tracked call, with campaign identity attached.
- 05Qualified consultation — right practice area, right jurisdiction, booked.
- 06New client instruction — the firm opens a matter for that client.
- 07Fee revenue — what the matter is worth, where practical to record.
What does each stage actually require?
| Stage | What it needs | Usual blocker |
|---|---|---|
| Search term → Ad | Search terms reporting reviewed against negatives regularly | Nobody owns the weekly review |
| Ad → Landing page | A page per priority practice area, not a homepage | Website change requires marketing sign-off |
| Landing page → Enquiry | Hidden fields capturing GCLID/GBRAID/WBRAID, plus call tracking | Form provider cannot store hidden fields |
| Enquiry → Consultation | A consistent qualification field in the CRM | Intake team classify inconsistently |
| Consultation → Instruction | Matter-opened status readable against the same record | Case management access is restricted |
| Instruction → Fee revenue | Matter value exported at a summary level | Confidentiality and finance sign-off |
| Back into Google Ads | Offline conversion import on a schedule | No owner for the export |
Read that table as a sequencing tool. There is no point building offline conversion imports before hidden fields are capturing click identifiers, and no point capturing identifiers if intake has no consistent qualification field to populate.
Where should a firm start if it can only do one thing?
Capture the click identifier on every enquiry form and route tracked calls into the same record. That single change is usually a day of work, requires no case management access, and it is the one step that cannot be applied retrospectively. Everything else in the chain can be built later against enquiries you have already captured properly.
A sensible order of build
- 01Hidden GCLID/GBRAID/WBRAID fields on all paid-facing forms, plus call tracking on the same pages.
- 02One qualification field in the CRM, with two or three agreed values and a written definition.
- 03Matter-opened status readable against the enquiry record — a monthly export is enough to start.
- 04Offline conversion import of qualified consultations first, instructions once volume allows.
- 05Value-weighted conversions by practice area, once the instruction data has a few months behind it.
What are the honest constraints?
Three, and none of them are technical.
- Permissions. Case management systems in law firms are governed carefully and for good reason. What can be exported, and by whom, is a decision for the firm, not for the agency.
- Definitions. Attribution is only as consistent as the intake team's classification. A qualification field with five overlapping options produces worse reporting than no field at all.
- Privacy. Nothing in this model requires matter detail or client-identifying content to leave the firm. Campaign identity, a stage, and where practical a value, are sufficient — and that is the right boundary to hold.
Where a firm cannot export instruction data at all, the model still works one stage earlier: optimise toward qualified consultations, and review instructions manually each quarter. That is a weaker signal, not a broken one.
What changes once the chain is connected?
Budget decisions stop being arguments. You can see which practice areas produce instructions at a cost the firm is happy with, which search terms consistently produce enquiries nobody wants, and which landing pages convert people who go on to instruct rather than people who simply fill in forms.
It also changes what you ask of Google Ads. Instead of optimising toward more of everything, the system is optimising toward the outcomes you told it are valuable — which is the difference between more leads and more matters worth taking.
