How Law Firms Can Track Google Ads Through Their CRM to New Instructions
Capture the Google click identifier and campaign data with every enquiry, store them against the record in your CRM or case management system, map intake stages from enquiry to qualified consultation to new client instruction, and import those outcomes back into Google Ads. Attribution will never be perfect — it only needs to be better than counting leads.
What are the seven stages you are trying to connect?
The Search-to-Matter model is deliberately boring: Search Term → Ad → Practice-Area Landing Page → Enquiry → Qualified Consultation → New Client Instruction → Fee Revenue. A new client instruction means the client formally instructs the firm and a matter is opened.
Most firms have solid data for the first four stages and nothing joining them to the last three. The build below closes that join. The reasoning behind the model is set out in a practical attribution model for law firms; this article is the implementation.
What should be captured at the point of enquiry?
At minimum, a click identifier and enough campaign context to make it useful. Google passes GCLID for standard clicks, and GBRAID / WBRAID for certain app and privacy-constrained iOS journeys, so store whichever is present rather than assuming GCLID.
| Field | Where it comes from | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| GCLID / GBRAID / WBRAID | URL parameter on the ad click | The only reliable key back to the ad account |
| Campaign, ad group, keyword | URL parameters or auto-tagging | Lets you read outcomes by practice area |
| Landing page URL | Captured by the form | Connects post-click testing to outcomes |
| First-touch timestamp | Set on first visit | Handles the long legal consideration window |
| Enquiry channel | Form or tracked call | Phone-led practice areas break form-only reporting |
Store these in hidden form fields and in a first-party cookie that survives the gap between first click and eventual enquiry. Legal decisions are rarely same-session, and a capture window measured in days will undercount.
How do phone enquiries fit in?
In several practice areas phone calls are the majority of usable enquiries, so form-only tracking will systematically undervalue the campaigns that work. Dynamic number insertion assigns a tracked number to paid visitors and ties the call back to the session that produced it.
The important part is what happens afterwards: the call needs an outcome recorded in the same place as form enquiries, using the same qualification definitions. A call log that only records duration re-creates the reporting gap in a new system.
What CRM stages does this actually need?
Fewer than most firms expect. Three stages carry almost all of the value, and each needs a definition the intake team can apply the same way on a busy Monday:
- 01Enquiry received — a form or tracked call has arrived. No judgement applied yet.
- 02Qualified consultation — right practice area, right jurisdiction, within capacity, and worth a fee earner's diary slot.
- 03New client instruction — the client has instructed the firm and a matter is opened. Add fee revenue where it can be exported.
How do outcomes get back into Google Ads?
Through offline conversion imports: you send the stored click identifier, a conversion name, a timestamp and — where you can — a value. Google matches it back to the click, and bidding starts optimising toward the stage you imported rather than toward raw form fills.
- Define separate conversion actions for qualified consultation and new client instruction.
- Import on a regular schedule — weekly is usually enough — via a scheduled upload or a CRM integration.
- Give the instruction conversion a value where matter revenue can be exported; a consistent proxy value is better than none.
- Where click identifiers are unavailable, enhanced conversions for leads can match on hashed contact data instead, subject to your consent and permissions position.
Only switch bidding to optimise toward instructions once the volume supports it. Below a reliable flow of imported instructions per month, optimise toward qualified consultations and review instructions manually each quarter. That is a weaker signal, not a broken one.
What are the privacy and permissions constraints?
Nothing in this model requires matter detail or client-identifying content to leave the firm. What travels back to Google is a click identifier, a stage name, a timestamp and optionally a value. That is the right boundary and it is worth stating explicitly to your compliance lead.
- Consent. Tracking and any hashed-data matching must sit inside your consent and privacy notice position.
- Permissions. Case management systems are governed carefully; what can be exported, and by whom, is the firm's decision.
- Data minimisation. Export the stage and the value, never the matter narrative.
What are the honest limits of this?
Attribution is directional, not forensic. Cross-device journeys break. Consent choices remove some data entirely. Referrals and reputation influence conversions that a click identifier will happily claim. Long legal consideration windows mean this quarter's instructions often belong to last quarter's spend.
None of that is an argument for going back to lead counts. A model that is right about direction, consistently applied, is enough to move budget toward the practice areas that produce matters worth taking — and that is the only decision this reporting has to support.
